A renormalization approach of the PC SAFT equation of state for the critical region of mixtures.

PROCESSIUM communicates at SAFT 2011, Pau, October 24-25th 2011.
Introduction
Recent equations of state (EoS) based on statistical thermodynamics, like the SAFT models (Statistical Associating Fluid Theory) [1] are promising for determining thermodynamic properties of associating and polar fluids and for the
simulation of processes involving complex fluid mixtures. Some physical properties of fluids change drastically in the vicinity of the mixtures’ critical point. For many processes it is therefore important to accurately determine ther-
modynamic properties close to the critical point. Unfortunately, classical equations of state including the PC-SAFT EoS [2] fail to represent the critical region. The reason is that mean field theory is not adequate at the critical point –
rather, a renormalisation theory must be used that accounts for the diverging fluctuations in some parameters at the critical point. White proposed a renormalization procedure based on a perturbation approach using well defined inter-
molecular potentials [3]. In this poster, we present results obtained for pure components and mixtures involving hydrocarbons and alcohols.
Renormalization Approach [4]

Results
Conclusion
The renormalization theory of White applied with the PC-SAFT EoS leads to a significantly improved representation of the critical region in comparison with classical PC-SAFT EoS.
Two approximations methods have been used, namely the phase-space cell approximation (PS) and the isomorphic approximation (I). They perform similarly for most mixtures and each of them displays stronger cases depending on the system concerned.
In this work, a single interaction parameter was not able to fit simultaneously experimental x c -T c and x c -P c data. The PC-SAFT RG could be improved by finding an alternative way to obtain its parameters (here fitted to critical coordinates). PC-SAFT RG
is nevertheless able to provide good estimates of mixtures critical points using subcritical data for tuning the parameters of the model. In order to continue the work of Moussa Dicko [13] and Chien-bin Soo [14], a new thesis dealing with calculations and
measurements in the critical region should begin shortly.

EFIB: The largest conference in Europe for the bio-based market EFIB 2011
Why EFIB is important?
EFIB is now clearly established as the market leading conference for the Industrial Biotech sector with high profile speakers, a comprehensive exhibition, large attendance and networking opportunities with big name CEOs and policy makers. The conference brings together the entire value chain of the bio-based economy: from farmers and feedstock producers to producers of innovative bio-based products.
What is special about this year's conference?
Taking place in Amsterdam on October 19th & 20th, EFIB 2011 will feature over 60 high-profile speakers, two plenary sessions, three parallel tracks, an exhibition and vast networking opportunities with over 400 senior decision-makers expected to attend.
This year's forum is particularly relevant because of the many recent policy developments in Europe. The Bio-based Economy is set to grow by 38% CAGR over the next 5 years; therefore it will form the cornerstone of Europe's sustainability and competitive strategies.

Over the last 12 months, Chemicals Northwest has been running an ambitious business improvement pilot programme called ‘Process Innogateway’. With funding from the Northwest Regional Development Agency, we have been able to work with seven manufacturing sites across the region to test a methodology for assessing a company’s performance, benchmarking it against UK and world class chemical sector standards, establishing interventions for improvement and identifying shared opportunities for companies aiding each other.
This event will share best practice and learning from some of the companies involved in the programme: Akcros Chemicals, Innospec, Innovia Films, PQ Corporation, RS Clare, Springfields Fuels, and William Blythe; which range from family owned SMEs to sites with large multinational backgrounds. 12 business areas were investigated including supply chain and logistics; operational performance; process development; resource efficiency and new product development.
The results from our pilot study should be of interest to chemical sector manufacturers (senior management, operations, R&D, engineering... in fact anyone within such a business!), and organisations that provide support to the sector.
Come and hear from those involved and find out how your company can adopt some beneficial new practices.

After such a positive response to our first two breakfast networking events, we would like to invite you attend our third breakfast event which is taking place at the Heath on 29th September. The main focus of these events is to “Network” with like- minded people from the Chemical Sector so make sure you bring a few spare business cards.
In addition to the networking, there will be 2 short pitches on industry related topics;
Gordon Neilson from Optimised Energy Solutions based at Daresbury SIC will be discussing how best to manage your energy savings; the business need, the fundamentals of energy management and how their software, training and support packages enable improved results through self management. This is not one to miss! Karen Hands from Thought into Action Ltd will be speaking about striking the balance between preparation, action and review when completing tasks, whether you work individually or as a team. She will give you a thought for the day and a time-saving tip to get you into action.

ABSTRACT:
A good understanding and prediction of the phase equilibrium of the fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) + glycerol + methanol ternary system is needed to design and optimize the separation unit of the biodiesel production process. In this work, new experimental vapor−liquid−liquid data on the ternary system have been measured at temperatures between 333.15 and 473.15 K. In addition, new data have been gathered on the methanol + glycerol [vapor−liquid equilibrium (VLE)] and methanol + methyl oleate (VLE and liquid−liquid equilibrium) binary systems. A group contribution method combined with a statistical associating fluid theory equation of state (GC-PPC-SAFT) proposed earlier by our group (Tamouza, S., Passarello, J.-P., Tobaly, P., and de Hemptinne, J.-C.Group contribution method with SAFT EOS applied to vapor liquid equilibria of various hydrocarbons series. Fluid Phase Equilib. 2004, 222−223, 67−76) and recently extended to predict VLE of heavy esters and their mixtures (Nguyen Huynh, D., Falaix, A., Passarello, J.-P., Tobaly, P., and de Hemptinne, J.-C.Predicting VLE of heavy esters and their mixtures using GC-SAFT. Fluid Phase Equilib. 2008, 264, 184−200) is here applied to model vapor liquid−liquid equilibria of methanol + glycerol + methyl oleate. The SAFT parameters for the glycerol pure component have been regressed using two association schemes (4C and 3X2B). The dispersive binary interaction parameters kij have been regressed on the binary systems. The group contribution scheme was used for predicting the ester properties.

Development of processes, or the search for substitutes requires many thermophysical experimental data manipulation. If a large number of databases exist, accessible data are often of very varying qualities, either unavailable or even non-existent in the area of pressure-temperature-composition for existing applications.
Through this day, we propose a thought on the current data availability, their validation and how they are used. Examples of applications are mentioned, or the development of models (regressions or validations), either for establishing reverse tools (QSAR - QSPR) to identify products meeting the most searched properties criteria.

Pascal ROUSSEAUX, President and founder of Processium, member of the Cluster Axelera, participates in the steering committee "Ecosystem - Eco-designed processes" and in the strategic axis "Plant of the future" - January 27, 2010.
The cluster's ambition is to build a chemistry-environment sector in Rhône-Alpes with an international visibility.
This ambition is available in 4 major strategic objectives:
1. Leading the construction of a scientific and economic attractive sector combining chemistry and environment
2. Enabling technological breakthrough on thematic fields related to the market needs
3. Becoming an international showcase of innovation in the field of chemistry environment
4. Federate the construction of a French Ecotechnologies network
Based on a global market survey conducted by Axelera, late 2008 early 2009, 8 target areas were identified for the cluster. In order to develop innovation projects declined around these 8 market segments targets, 5 strategic themes have been selected, including the "Factory of the Future - Clean Processes."
